What Does It Mean To Be In Balance?
“To be in balance” is a common expression used that alludes to a harmonized state of our wellbeing. This phrase, “to be in balance” implies that we are in a harmonic state, perfectly encompassing the ideal ratio of activities as they relate to one another in the sum total of our life experience. “To be in balance” often attempts to convey that somehow in the vast complexity of the sum total of all the components within our life, a cohesion of precise alignment has been reached. Upon reaching this balance point, there is an underlying sentiment of a desired state of wholeness, joy, happiness and fulfillment attained.
Sometimes the striving for balance can often seem like a pursuit to a particular destination that will arrive us somewhere.
“Ah-ha! Now I’ve found it- now I am balanced!”
Once arrived in balanced, there is nothing left to do, nothing left to negotiate, nothing left to assess, nothing left to adjust to. The balance has been found and now the job is to stay fixed with it. Stable. Secure…and rather unmoving and in fact, no longer changing.
This belief exposes the true animated nature of balance.
Balance is not a destination that lands us into a static state of holding a specific position. Quite the contrary: the balance point is dynamic and constantly shifting. This occurs in perfect relation to the totality of all information that is enlivening the living system that is you.
In fact, the balance point is a perfect reflection of the dynamism of life and the aliveness of the lived experience. This dynamism of life is continuously and constantly unfolding and moving towards its truest point of ease, alignment and stability. Nuanced shifts and changes and recalibrations occurring moment to moment are not only desired but necessary.
The real pursuit of being in balance, thus, lies within the individual's ability to reside in the receptive awareness that is unified within the body-mind relationship. Through the amplification of receptivity within the body-mind, the body increases its ability to adapt. This ability to adapt is pivotal in supporting the balance state experienced. In fact, the ability to adapt is considered the standard of health because adaptability is essential to creating shifts that support the body’s needs in any given moment.
